Love in Somerville: Liza and Seneca

In spite of October's advance, the brilliant colors of Fall had only just started to show in the leaves around Somerville, MA. It was early in the morning and a chill was in the air as we staked out Nathan Tufts Park off of Broadway. Birches peeked out from the rest of the trees here and there and as we climbed the stone steps leading toward the old powder house, a few dogs and their owners were just leaving.

Caitlin and Ryan: A Charlestown Love Story

Caitlin and Ryan met and first fell in love in Charlestown, and they returned there for their engagement session amongst the gas lamps, cobblestone streets and unique architecture in the shadow of Bunker Hill in Boston, Massachusetts. In spite of the humidty, the two were game to explore the nooks and crannies of the neighborhood for photographic opportunities, and even indulge in a few dramatic displays of affection.

Beyond the couple's history, the streets of Charlestown offered a number of interesting sets for an engagement session full of parks, alleyways and gardens that offers the best of the city with an old-world charm. We started at Cirty Square Park, with photos around the fountain and wound up at the coffee shop where they used to have lunch, sneaking away from work to spend time together.

Caitlin and Ryan will be married next year at the Rockland Art Association in Rockland, MA.

What is an engagement session with Ryan Richardson Photography?

It's part portrait shoot, part fashion show with a couple of ice breakers and bad jokes thrown into the mix. During your engagement session, you'll have a chance to expres yourself and become familiar with posing and your photographer. Typically, we'll meet up at some lovely little spot and ramble for a little over an hour taking pictures and talking about your wedding and your relationship. New Year, New Offerings

It's true, there's more to life than weddings. Life is made up of thousands of moments and occassions, and for all of them we'd like you to consider Ryan Richardson Photography.

Last week, when we unveiled our referral rewards program, we offered wedding clients the chance to save on future portrait sessions. Today, I'd like to talk a little bit more about what Ryan Richardson Photography has to offer...

Lifestyle and Environmental Photography:

Ryan Richardson Photography is not a portrait studio. Because our two biggest businesses (weddings and editorial photography) are out in the real world, we bring that sensibility to much of our portrait work. Sitting awkwardly on a stool in front of a white or blue background doesn't say anything about you and it doesn't help to create great images.

Whether it's a special spot, the great outdoors or any other place, a location can turn a good picture into a great image. Picking the right location lets your personality shine though and makes your portraits stand out from what you can get from a mall (it's also often more convenient for the client). Sessions typically last about an hour, going through a variety of poses as well as compositions and angles.

Senior Portraits: $200

Senior sessions are geared toward creating great images for parents and teens as they round out their high school careers. Senior year marks a turning point in a young adult's life, a transition from student and child into the adult world and the senior session lets them express themselves and capture that moment in photographs.

In addition to the proof disc of watermarked images, the senior package includes one full-resolution image for use in yearbooks, newspaper announcements as well as senior slideshows. For parents, plenty of great print products are available to share with the rest of the family.

Family Portraits: $200+

Whether you want to mark the arrival of a new member of just get a beautiful image for your holiday cards a family portrait session is the way to go. During your session we will create several posed group shots as well as shots of individuals and different combinations. Price quoted is for a family of four.

Engagement Session: $200

An engagement session is a great way to test the waters with a photographer before your wedding. It lets you get comfortable with him and create some great images to mark the occasion of your engagement. These images can be used to create save-the-date cards, wedding guest books and many other products to pave the way for your wedding.

Customers who purchase an engagement session may recieve a 10 percent discount on purchase of a wedding package.

Maternity & Newborn Package: $1,200

Having a baby is an exciting time full of challenges and changes. To commemorate a new addition to your life and your family, I offer the Maternity & Newborn Package that offers coverage of the first year of your child's life. The package begins with a maternity session, then follows up with a newborn photo session and additional sessions at intervals of three months (a total of 6 session) to follow the growth of your child.

'Tis the Season: A Holiday Guide to Your Engagement

Massachusetts Wedding Photography by Ryan Richardson Photography

Winter in New England is a pretty quiet time for weddings. Snow has fallen over the ground, casting a beautifully serene blanket over the earth.  It's a time of year where we try to forget the world outside by turning inward toward our friends and families, bathing ourselves in the sunny glow of holiday parties and good cheer.

It might not be the time for weddings, but winter is the season for engagements. According to The Knot, most couples get engaged sometime between Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day. And what better time is there? The long nights are perfect for a little romance, and it's rare to have so many people you care about gathered in one place to celebrate the triumphs of the year past and the road that lies ahead.

Also, the non-stop ads for jewelry certainly help to bring the conversation toward engagement rings.

So while everyone else is popping champagne corks, a few are getting ready to pop the question. As a wedding professional I've heard of everything from happy endings to horror stories, and to help make sure the answer is yes I've come up with a few tips.
