'Tis the Season: A Holiday Guide to Your Engagement

Massachusetts Wedding Photography by Ryan Richardson Photography

Winter in New England is a pretty quiet time for weddings. Snow has fallen over the ground, casting a beautifully serene blanket over the earth.  It's a time of year where we try to forget the world outside by turning inward toward our friends and families, bathing ourselves in the sunny glow of holiday parties and good cheer.

It might not be the time for weddings, but winter is the season for engagements. According to The Knot, most couples get engaged sometime between Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day. And what better time is there? The long nights are perfect for a little romance, and it's rare to have so many people you care about gathered in one place to celebrate the triumphs of the year past and the road that lies ahead.

Also, the non-stop ads for jewelry certainly help to bring the conversation toward engagement rings.

So while everyone else is popping champagne corks, a few are getting ready to pop the question. As a wedding professional I've heard of everything from happy endings to horror stories, and to help make sure the answer is yes I've come up with a few tips.

Regarding Retouching

I spent much of my day Sunday going back and forth with a client about a hairline. It's unfortunate that we don't always look like the picture in our minds of someone with great hair, great teeth and great skin. In this case it was mostly the first category.

In photojournalism we're taught that pictures tell stories and speak the truth. You might get away with a crop here and a color-correction there, but to push around pixels in something like Photoshop was like making up a quote or fudging a few facts.

Portraiture is a different story, since you're not trying to find some objective reality through your lens but an artistic truth. Retouching helps a photographer reach that truth when posing and lighting cannot. With enough effort the banal can become beautiful and the real, surreal.

Unfortunately Photoshop can easily go too far. You see it every time you pass a magazine rack, dozens of perfectly plastic people staring out at you, all of the little bumps and imperfections sanded away until they all look almost identical.

At Ryan Richardson Photography, I try to find a middle ground between reality and the artistic truth. To arrive at that point, I have two rules that I follow for every photo I retouch to go on the blog or in an album.

Lisa & Ernie: 10/23/2010

Often weddings are portrayed as pageants for prima donnas. If WE TV is to be believed, weddings are a tacky arms race to the altar.

A minute at Ernie and Lisa Covino's wedding would have told you that's miles from the truth. I've rarely attended a wedding with a more palpable sense of family, friendship, love and even humor woven through the ceremony, the reception and the rest of their lives.
