Beyond the Card: Fun Ideas for Holiday Portraits | Boston Lifestyle Photography
Christmas cards - no matter what the sentiment - are a wonderful tradition. What better way to spread the spirit of the holidays than to slip a little surprise into the flood of junk mail and bills that we usually find in our mailboxes? Holiday cards are a great way to reconnect with friends and families even when life is hectic, and give them a little something to let them know that you’ve been thinking about them.
But maybe you find the usual crop of holiday cards to be a little bit flat? Or perhaps you’re looking for something more fun to do with your holiday photography session with Ryan Richardson Photography? We’ve got four fun alternatives to traditional holiday cards that can make this season extra special. With a little tweaking, some of these ideas can even work for other Boston lifestyle photography sessions.
Slideshow - Why be tied down to just one picture with a card when you could have dozens in a slideshow? If you’re thinking of going with an e-card this holiday season, consider putting together a slideshow where you can share images from throughout the year and more of your favorites from your holiday photo session. If you want to make something dramatically different, include video clips and your own voice-over for a more personal touch.
Ornaments - Cards are often used to decorate a home during the holidays, so why not take the natural next step and turn your holiday photos into an ornament. Ryan Richardson Photography can help you create cool conversation pieces with your photos. If you’re feeling craftier (or want to score extra points with grandparents), then there are endless DIY options and art projects for kids.
Christmas Carol Lip-sync - Take a page from Tik Tok and get silly with it. You can use your session to create a short, fun video with a lip-sync holiday song and dance show. It’s easier than ever to share photos and videos with the people you love, and this could really bring them a smile on a cold December evening.
Animated Images - Sometimes referred to as cinemagraphs, these are a way to add life to a photograph by using either short, looping videos or animations. Effects can range from the subtle to the spectacular. For longer-term planning you can recreate the same photo each year and see how your family grows and changes. Put these images together and you’ll have a time-lapse of your lives.
Stickers and Magnets - Magnets are very popular for Save the Dates, why not for holiday cards? You can also have fun with sticker packs made from your photos - add them to existing cards, use them as gift tags, or apply them to other crafts. However, stickers and magnets are probably best used to supplement cards since there’s usually no place to put a sentiment or signature like there would be in a traditional holiday card.
