Fashion Mix-up: Mismatched Bridesmaids’ Dresses | Boston Wedding Photography

Enjoy the rainbow of bridesmaids. A wedding party rocking the mismatched look to fit with the bride’s handmade rainbow-accented wedding dress at a fall wedding in Vermont.

As couples take more creative control over their Boston weddings they’re also breaking out of the traditional bridesmaid box, eschewing the uniform look in favor of something more eclectic. But what are the best ways to manage a mismatched bridal squad according to the experts?

  1. Know Your Vision:There’s mismatched (chic) and then there’s mismatched (disaster). If you’re looking for the former then you’ll want to have a firm understanding of the look and feel of your Boston wedding. What are your themes? What are your colors? Are you having a black tie event or a casual backyard BBQ? From there you can think of what sort of wedding party attire will work with that and avoid anyone looking like they’ve come for a totally different event. As an extra step, take some time to pre-select a few options while you are bridal shopping.

  2. Coordinate and Communicate: Once you have your vision in mind, you want to be able to transmit it to your squad. Mood boards are great for this and there are plenty of collaborative tools (shared Google Docs, a wedding group chat) to get the conversation going. This will allow your party to give some input and feedback into their looks, keep people from trodding on too many toes (after all, it’s not mismatched if half of the bridal party is wearing basically the same dress), and keep everyone in at least the same book if they’re not going to be on the same page.

  3. Put a Bow On It: Don’t literally tie a bow onto every bridesmaid, but you can bring an eclectic ensemble together by using matching accessories or bouquets that serve as a visual through-line for each individual outfit.

Why Mix and Match?

Bridal parties are increasingly diverse, especially with more cross-gender wedding parties, so it’s harder for a cookie-cutter dress to work well with every body. Changing up the color and style can also help everyone look their best.

Are you planning on going with mismatched outfits for your bridal party? If so, what are some tips that you’ve found helpful along the way? If not, what are some ways you can make one dress look great across a variety of bridesmaids?
